1/26/1929Indian National Congress proclaims goal for India's independence.
10/6/1862Indian Penal Code was notified. However, it was implemented from 1st January 1862.
3/22/1902Great Britain and Persia agree to link Europe and India by telegraph.
4/4/1905More than 10,000 people are feared to have perished in an earthquake that hit the northeast Indian province of Lahore during the night. The town of Dharmsala was almost completely razed to the ground with the entire population rendered homeless and sleeping out in icy conditions. Five hundred Gurkha soldiers were buried alive when their stonebuilt barracks collapsed on them. The towns of Kangra and Palampur have also been leveled to the ground by the worst natural disaster measured at 8 on Ricter Scale. In Lahore, 70 Hindus were killed, Muslim inhabitants were parading in the streets, weeping and offering up prayers with ceremonial rites. Several British administrators and missionaries were known to have been killed or injured. At Simla, Lady Curzon, wife of the Viceroy, had a close escape from death when a chimney crashed into the room in which she was sleeping.
12/31/1929At the Lahore session, under the Presidentship of Jawaharlal Nehru, the Congress adopted a resolution of 'Poorna Swaraj' (Complete Independence), the slogan given by Gandhiji. The tricolour flag of freedom was unfurled and 26th January 1930 was decided to be celebrated as Independence day every year. This session led to Civil Disobedience Movement, Dandi March to break the Salt Law, etc.
4/10/1901Amiya Chakravarty, educationist, was born at Serampore in West Bengal.
6/9/199881 persons are killed as cyclone hits the Saurashtra and Kutch regions of Gujarat and Jalore district of Rajasthan. Subsequently, the toll is put at 934 in the Kutch-Saurashtra region alone.
3/17/1798Rani Shiromani anounced to attack the British Army.
