7/26/1910Queen Elizabeth I granted its Royal Charter to the 218 Knights and merchants of the City of London who formed the East India Company. The venture failed to achieve its stated objectives -- it made little impression on the Dutch control of the spice trade and could not establish a lasting outpost in the East Indies.
9/15/1953S. Vijayalakshmi Pandit was elected as the first lady President of the eighth session of the United Nations Organisation's (UNO) General Assembly.
5/19/1904Jamshedji Nasarvanji Tata, famous industrialist and father of modern technology, passed away at Nauheim, Hesse-Nassau, France. He commenced cotton mills in Bombay and Nagpur and founded the Tata Iron and Steel Company, which is one of the largest integrated steel mills in the world.
7/30/1886Dr. S.Muthulakshmi Reddi, first women M.A.L.A.S, was born.
7/15/1991The 25-day-old Narasimha Rao government wins a vote of confidence in Lok Sabha by securing 241 to 111; 112 abstained.
8/3/1957Devdas Gandhi, son of Rashtrapita Mahatma Gandhiji and noted journalist, passed away.
1/17/1905Dattaraya Ramchandra Kaprekar was born at Dahanu near Bombay. He discovered the shortest possible routes to solve mathematical problems. In 1927, he won the wrangler R. P. Paranjpe Mathematical Prize for an Original Piece of work in mathematics. He discovered 'Kaprekar Constant' in 1946. It is the number ""6174"". The constant 6174 is arrived at and this number then generates itself into one set of numbers called ""self numbers"" that is also known by his name. Kaprekar passed away in 1988.
4/22/1930Revolutionary Surjya Sen's many associates were killed and Surjya Sen ""Masterda"" himself went underground, on Jalalabad Hill and started extending his activities to neighbouring districts.
