8/22/1877Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy, great painter, philosopher, linguist, critic, art researcher in the East, was born at Colombo in Sri Lanka.
1/25/1950The post of the Governor General of India was abolished.
10/1/1854Postal stamp introduced in India. These lithographed stamps were of denominations of half anna and one anna. These stamps bore the Head of Queen Victoria with India at top and value at bottom. The half anna stamp was printed between May 5 to July 29 and printing of one anna stamp commenced on July 26.
3/28/1956Tirumalai Ananthanpillai Sekhar, great Indian cricket pace-bowler (2 Tests 1982-83 little impact), was born in Madras.
1/22/1886Harikrishna Premi, Hindi writer, passed away.
1/20/1817Ram Mohun Roy started Hindu College in Calcutta with the help of Justice H. East David Hare. This college was later renamed as the Presidency College.
1/21/1945Shri Rashbehari Basu, great revolutionary, freedom fighter, social reformer and leader, passed away at Tokyo, Japan, at the age of 60.
12/13/1902Ilachandra Joshi, famous Hindi novelist, story writer, critic and journalist, was born.
2/20/1982The Kangla Tongbi war memorial built for 221 members of Advance Base Depot, who laid down their lives to repulse several waves of Japanese attacks, was finally shifted to College of Materials Management Jabalpur. The original memorial was erected on 15 Apr 1946 from local stone and the main epitaph displayed above is of black Naga stone.
