Mercer Island is great for commuting to Seattle and Bellevue for but you wont have access easy to stores, malls etc.

We did a lot of research after moving here in Dec. My husband works in Seattle downtown and I work in Kirkland. We wanted to be close to Indian groceries, activities for kids, temples and still have easy access to Seattle. West Bellevue, Somerset, Bridle Trails, Kirkland Houghton and Downtown area, Redmond around Microsoft and Marymoor park will provide easy access to highway, great culture, lots to do and great schools.
