How to get a new Washington State driver license
If you have never had a driver license
before and are over 18:
- You will need to appear in person at one of the
driver
licensing office in Washington. You will need:

Proof of identity and residence.
- $45 license fee ($20 for your
application and $25 for your license) in cash or by a check.
- You will need to complete a Driver license application at
the Driver Licensing office. Be ready to provide the following
information in the application.
- Your address and Phone number.
- Your social security number. The social security number will
be verified but will not appear on your license.
- Your physical description such as height, weight and eye color.
- Your place of birth and mother’s maiden name.
- A physical and mental fitness statement.
- Previous driver license information, if you had those in
past.
- Details of Suspensions, Revocations, or Cancellations of prior
driver licenses.
- Pass a
driving knowledge test.. This test must be completed before
you can schedule a driving test.
- Pass a vision screening and demonstration of color
recognition.
- Pass a
driving test. Note, to practice driving you will need to get an
instruction permit.
- Photograph - It will be taken at the licensing office, you
do not need to take it with you..
When will you get the license?
After all of the above steps are taken care of you will receive a temporary license at the driver licensing
office. This will allow you to drive for 45 days. Your permanent Washington driver license will
arrive in mail (at the address provided by you in your application)
in 5 days. If you do not received your new license within 20 days,
