Small Space, Big Spirit: How to Decorate Your Apartment for the Holidays

Living in a small apartment or condo doesn't mean you have to skimp on the holiday spirit. No room for a 7-foot tree in your living room or no dining room table on which to display a menorah? While you may not have a roof you can trim with holiday lights and it may not be possible to fit a large tree inside your home, there are still ways to decorate a small space. Here are a few ideas for adding seasonal touches to your home, whether you are hosting the holidays or you just want to decorate your apartment your own enjoyment.

Go for the Mini Tree
For some, a towering tree with all the trimmings is a sign of the holiday season. But if you have a small apartment or condo, that might not be practical. Instead, Better Homes and Gardens recommends getting a mini tree or tree top and dressing it up with lights, ornaments and a small star. You can even cover a few empty boxes with festive wrapping paper and put them under the tree to look like presents.

Utilize What You Have
Another idea offered by Better Homes and Gardens is to make use of furniture and other home accents as a way to display decorations around the house. Hang garland and stockings on your mantel to give it a warm touch of color. Then, add ribbon to some festive ornaments and hang them from your bookshelves. For the finishing touch, put sleigh bells or mini wreaths on your coat hooks and keep your jackets hidden away in a closet.

Maximize Air Space
Festive garlands don't just have to wrap around trees or doorways " they can also hang from the ceiling and across rooms so they don't take up usable space. Martha Stewart offers a few ideas for easy-to-make garlands, featuring stars and dreidels. With a piece of paper and some scissors, you can quickly create four-, five-, six-, eight- or 10-pointed stars to hang from bookshelves or string together as garlands and add a little shine to any holiday. For the dreidel garland, simply add some glitter to several plain, wooden dreidels, glue a bead with a hole to the top and thread some tinsel through to create a strand.

Bring in the Holiday Smells
Scents like cinnamon, apple and pine seem to go hand in hand with the holiday season. For this reason, the Wall Street Journal notes many people use decorative candles or potpourri in these scents to create a warmer and more comforting environment. (If you light candles, be sure to follow fire safety precautions.)

Make Use of Vertical Space
Decorations don't just have to go on tables or shelves. Better Homes and Gardens suggests using a blank wall as a place to put up wreaths or other hanging decorations. But don't just stop at the wall. Windows can be a great backboard for holiday decorations, as well. Martha Stewart proposes hanging homemade blue and yellow vellum stars in your window to make the daytime a little more colorful.

Whether you live in a big city and have a small apartment, or you live alone and just don't need much space, holiday decorating is still possible. Use these holiday decorating ideas for small spaces and see if you can bring more spirit into your home this year.
