The Election Commission announces the poll schedule for the 12th Lok Sabha. The polling will be on February 16, 22, 28 and March 7. Simultaneously, elections are to be held for the Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh Assemblies.

8/30/1979Earl Louis Mountbatten of Burma, a World War II hero, last British Viceroy in India and the first Governor General of independent India, was killed when Irish terrorists exploded his family fishing boat off the coast of Ireland. The Provisional wing of the Irish Republican Army immediately took credit for the killing, which it described as 'an execution' designed to further 'the noble struggle to drive the British intruders out of our native land'.
6/2/1953Mountaineer Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and his Nepalese Sherpa guide Tensing became the first men to conquer Mount Everest, the world's tallest mountain. The two reached the pinnacle of Everest, more than 29,000 feet above sea level, at 11.30 a.m.
11/1/1956Indian Government re-organizes the states according to linguistic principles and inaugurates second Five-Year Plan. The states declared were Madhya Pradesh, Punjab by merging Patiala & PEPSU, Mumbai was divided in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Union Territories namely Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshdeep Minikai and Amin Divi were approved.
10/23/1959Chinese military confrontation with India in Aksai Chin killed 17 Indian soldiers in a clash on the Kashmir border.
2/3/1990Birsa Munda, freedom fighter and leader, was finally arrested in Chakradharpur forest.
2/11/1847Thomas Alva Edison, great scientist and inventor of electric light lamp, was born at Milan, Ohio.
