Jharkhand, the 28th State of the Indian Union, comes into being and the new Governor, Prabhat Kumar, and the Chief Minister, Babulal Marandi, take office.

1/14/1761The third and last battle of Panipat, fought between the Marathas and the Afghan invader Ahmad Shah Abadli, started. The Marathas lost 28,000 soldiers and were virtually routed in North India thus ending the Maratha hegemony.

6/19/1997Indian flag cargo ship, M. V. Arcadia Pride, sinks in inclement weather, seven nautical miles off Colaba, Mumbai, leaving four sailors dead and 20 missing. In the rescue and search operation by the Indian Navy, nine persons were rescued.
1/25/1983Bharat Ratna, India's highest award, was given to Acharya Vinobha Bhave (Posthumous) (1895-1982).
2/14/1999Fifth National Games inaugurated at Imphal.
